Bethells Beach (Te Henga) is a wild and remote west coast beach 50km from Auckland. Known for powerful beach breaks and beautiful black sand, it's less crowded than Piha but equally challenging. Strong rips and currents make this a spot for experienced surfers only. Works best on mid tide with offshore east winds. Check local knowledge before paddling out.

Long Bay is a sheltered beach on Auckland's North Shore, perfect for beginner surfers and families. The bay offers small, gentle beach breaks ideal for learning. Protected from large swells, making it consistent but mellow. Several surf schools operate here year-round. Works best on mid to high tide with northeast swells. Very beginner-friendly atmosphere.

Mission Bay is a sheltered eastern beach offering small, mellow waves perfect for absolute beginners. Located close to central Auckland with excellent amenities and cafes. The beach rarely gets quality surf but provides safe learning conditions for first-timers. Works only on high tide with rare east swells. More of a swimming beach but hosts surf lessons during calm summer conditions.

Muriwai Beach is a powerful west coast beach break located 40km northwest of Auckland. Known for consistent surf and dramatic gannet colony cliffs, Muriwai handles bigger swells than Piha. Multiple peaks along the beach offer variety, with the northern end usually less crowded. Works on all tides but best with offshore east winds. Experienced surfers only in larger conditions.
