The Cutback

The cutback is the primary maneuver for staying in the power pocket. When you race out onto the shoulder, a cutback brings you back to the curl where the energy is.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

  1. Preparation

As you race down the line and feel the wave softening (shoulder), move your weight back slightly. Look back towards the breaking part of the wave (the foam).

  2. Initiate the Turn

Switch from your inside rail to your outside rail. Open your shoulders and chest towards the beach/foam. Lead with your front arm.

  3. Hold the Rail

Carve a smooth arc back towards the curl. Keep your knees bent and hold the rail in the water. Don't rush it—let the board do the work.

  4. The Rebound

As you hit the whitewater/curl, bank off it. Transfer weight back to your inside rail to turn the board back down the line.
