The spine of the surfboard. Traditionally a strip of wood running down the center, it provides structural strength and controls the board's flex pattern.
The classic choice (usually Basswood or Ply). Provides a natural, predictable flex pattern that dampens chop. Feels "alive" but can lose its "pop" over time as the wood fatigues.
Classic FeelOften used on stringerless EPS/Epoxy boards. A strip of carbon fiber on the deck or bottom adds strength and creates a snappy, high-energy flex pattern. Very responsive.
Responsive SnappyInstead of a center stringer, the reinforcement runs along the rails (often carbon or high-density foam). This allows the center of the board to flex more, loading up energy in turns like a spring.
