The Layback

A maneuver where the surfer leans back so far that their back or trailing hand drags in the water. It's used to stall for a barrel or as a stylish finish to a turn.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

  1. Initiate the Turn

Start a powerful top turn or snap. As you push through the turn, instead of staying over the board, let your body fall backwards.

  2. The Lean

Extend your back leg and lean back until your back or hand hits the water. Your board will slide out in front of you, throwing a lot of spray.

  3. The Anchor

Your body in the water acts as an anchor, stalling the board. This is great for waiting for the barrel to catch up.

  4. Recovery

This is the hard part. Use your core strength and the momentum of the board to pull yourself back up to a standing position.
