Tube Riding (Barreling)

Getting barreled is the ultimate feeling in surfing. It requires perfect positioning, speed control, and the ability to read the wave intimately.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

  1. The Setup (Stall)

As the wave starts to throw, you need to slow down to let the lip go over you. Drag your hand, stall your tail, or do a fade turn to scrub speed.

  2. Pull In

Once you are in position, pull your line up slightly and tuck your body. Get compact to fit inside the cylinder.

  3. Navigate the Foamball

Keep your eyes open! Adjust your line to stay high enough to avoid the shockwave (foam ball) but low enough not to get sucked up the face.

  4. The Exit

As you see the exit (doggy door), pump or lean forward to generate speed and shoot out before the wave closes out.

Pro tips

  • Grab your rail (pig dog) on your backhand for stability.
  • Look at the exit, not the roof.
  • Commitment is everything. Hesitation leads to wipeouts.
