Step-by-Step Breakdown
Hand Placement
Place your hands flat on the deck, right next to your lower ribs (not the rails!). Keep your elbows tucked in close to your body, like a chicken wing.
The Push (Cobra)
Arch your back and push your chest up while keeping your hips and thighs on the board. Look forward, not down at your board.
The Snap
In one explosive motion, bring your knees toward your chest and plant your feet under your body. Your back foot should land over the fins, and your front foot near the center of the board.
Stand & Compress
Rise to a standing position but keep your knees bent (compressed). Keep your eyes on where you want to go. Do not stand up straight like a soldier!
Twenty years in
More than ever, after twenty years of surfing, I focus on my pop-up. Nearly every session. Every coach on YouTube still has tips on it. Listen to any pro podcast and they talk about adapting theirs for steeper drops, new boards, or a layoff. It is the first movement you learn, and paradoxically it feels like it is never mastered. Land practice with a phone video is probably the most overlooked advice for a technique this fundamental.
Learn with a coach or surf school
In-water feedback beats YouTube alone — especially for pop-ups, paddling, and ocean safety. Strongest coach listings in NZ and Australia; open worldwide.

- Don't grab the rails! It makes the board unstable.
- Look up, not down. Where you look is where you go.
- Practice on land (yoga mat) to build muscle memory.
